Our approach to teaching will provide you with the knowledge, opportunities, and support you need to grow and succeed in a global workplace. Every course at York has been designed to provide clear and ambitious learning outcomes. These learning outcomes give you an understanding of what you will be able to do at the end of the course. We develop each course by designing modules that grow your abilities towards the learning outcomes and help you to explain what you can offer to employers.
A selection of optimisation and simulation techniques are explored in more depth using Python via active learning in computer laboratories. There is an emphasis on applying the scientific approach to practical work within this module. You will study topics such as programming, machine learning, classification, clustering, AI in Healthcare and more, with modules that challenge you to combine and apply these topics on practical projects with career-launching outcomes. Strengthen your skillset by spending time in industry on a placement year, applying the skills you’ve learned throughout your academic studies in a practical, real-world environment. It’s an excellent opportunity to develop a professional career development plan and gain transferable workplace skills that can boost your employability. To reflect the growing demand for artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, graduates of this programme will learn the latest software skills in the development and deployment of applications making use of these technologies.
Degree structure
AI’s ability to mimic human intelligence, process massive datasets, and make informed decisions has ushered in a new era of possibilities. Sandwich placements are paid roles whereas work-based learning module placements are normally unpaid. Home undergraduate student fees are regulated and are currently capped at £9,250 per year; any changes will be subject to changes in government policy. International fees will increase annually, by no more than 5% or RPI (Retail Price Index), whichever is the greater. Our programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society, the Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). By specialising in AI you’ll develop a range of techniques which can be applied in software to solve complex problems.
You’ll finish your degree with a dissertation, which you’ll have the opportunity to link with the work of one of our two research centres – the Cyber Security Research Centre or the Intelligent Systems Research Centre. On the course you’ll also have the opportunity to work on collaborative projects with our long-standing partners in the fintech industry, including Lloyds Banking Group, Callsign and Open Banking Inc. These courses will provide you with the level of English needed to meet the conditions of your offer. We have four software and two hardware laboratories with professional grade facilities that you’ll use throughout your studies, depending on the modules you choose.
This unit covers the principal mathematical and statistical topics required to pursue further study in the areas of data science and machine learning. This unit explores a range of fundamental algorithms and data structures used to solve several computational ai engineering degree challenges fundamental to the study of data science and machine learning disciplines. You will learn to consider and discuss algorithm complexity and efficiency through practical implementation using data structures, graphs, graph algorithms and graph search.
